Tears In Maluku

"Bloody Christmas" ...this is the pledge of thousands of Laskar Jihad
fighters now gathering in Central Sulawesi ...as I write to you, another
1000 extremists are sailing in from Aceh. The Indonesian Army posts in
the region, protecting Christian villages, have been vacated. Where they
exist - they are outnumbered and outgunned ...sometimes 65 of them
sharing 3 guns, whereas the Laskar Jihad, waving their banners and
portraits of Osama Bin Laden are fully armed - grenade launchers and the
whole arsenal. They now man military posts, have taken over petrol
kiosks and check every passing vehicle for Christians ...and where they
are found, they are dragged out and shot. To give you a sense of reality
...below are some incidents over the last 1 ½ months. These are not just
"numbers" ...they are names of someone's father, mother, brother, sister
and children:

October 1 - Attack on Tomata. On "Pancasila Day" at about 1.30 am, the
jihad warriors from Korontowu, using both military and homemade weapons,
and equipped with bombs, again carried out an attack on the Christian
village of Tomata. The jihad bombed a church building as many as three
times until it was destroyed as was the pastor s house.
The jihad also bombed and burned down one school building together with
the teachers quarters, 66 houses and 11 motor bikes. The jihad shot dead
one citizen, Darma Monina (21). She was shot in the head and the chest.
Two other citizens were shot and wounded: Esther Paholagu (30) shot in
the right hand and Yulius Wileliku (40) shot in the right foot.

October 12 - Attack on Passenger Bus.
On Friday October 12th, the passenger bus "PO OMEGA" travelling from
Tentena to Palu, was held up and bombs were thrown at it by the jihad
warriors in the rural community of Maranda, in the village of Kilo, in
the Poso Coastal District. Several passengers were wounded and the
vehicle was damaged. This is the second time that PO OMEGA has been
attacked in this way. In the meantime, the jihad has continued to carry
out various attacks and terrorist acts against several other Christian
districts.
In the neighboring area of Peleru, the villages of Era and Mayumba, Mori
Atas District, Morowali Regency, the jihad continue to terrorize the
Christians by shooting towards these villages on purpose to terrorize
them.

October 14 - The Antariksa Bus is attacked. Jihad shoot and kill 1,
wound 8.
Palu, Sunday October 14th, 2001, the passenger bus, Antariksa, number
plate DN 7725 A, driven by Son was held up and shot by the jihad at
about 3.00 pm local time, while going up the hills between
Maleali-Sausu, Donggala Regency, on its journey to Palu from Tentena,
Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi. This area is an area of plantations and
jungle where no people live. Dozens of jihad carrying automatic military
weapons were hiding in the chocolate plantations on the right side of
the road.
When the bus carrying 31 passengers was climbing and passing these
plantations, suddenly they were held up by the jihad terrorists who
fired repeatedly with their automatic rifles. The bus passengers
panicked, lay down and were hysterical. The tires went flat due to the
shooting and the windows on the bus were shattered everywhere. The body
of the vehicle was full of holes as a result of the shooting. The jihad
terrorists also threw a bomb, but it fell about 4 meters away from the
bus. As a result of the shooting, one person was killed and 8 were
wounded. They were:
Nona (22), from Silanca, Poso, killed on the spot
Son (40) bus driver, wounded, shot in the ear
Mrs. Yessy Gaibu Banjolu (42), wounded
Mrs Mangela (34) shot in the left arm and lower right hip (critical)
Mrs Djumiaty (30), wounded
Mrs Wilhemina Manoreh (64) shot in the lower left hip

Meanwhile three other people were wounded and their names have not been
identified nevertheless they were treated in the Parigi Hospital, 100km
dari Palu. On leaving Tentena at 10.00 am local time this bus was
guarded by two members of the Police but they were only guarded until
they arrived in the village of Tambarana, Poso Coastal District which
borders the Donggala Regency because the military felt that the
situation from there on was safe, because they were outside the Poso
Regency.
The jihad warriors had studied the situation and took full advantage.
They felt secure because there were no military guards on the bus and
they possessed military firearms while the bus passengers had no
firearms. It is presumed that the jihad carried out surveillance and
coordination through the use of walkie-talkies while the passengers
rested and ate lunch in Tambarana. While firing, the jihad warriors
targeted the bus driver with the hope that the bus would quickly be
stopped and they could easily kill all the passengers. After being shot,
the driver immediately stopped the bus and jumped out through the left
door. His ear had been ripped by a bullet.
A woman, Nona (22) who sat directly to the left of the driver, was
killed immediately by a hail of jihad bullets. So, seeing the driver had
stopped the vehicle and jumped off to save himself, Rev. Omus Muncai, a
member of the Board of the Christian Church of Central Sulawesi
(Presbyterian) who ministers in Palu, who was also a passenger on the
bus, quickly took control of the steering wheel and drove the bus to a
level spot and sheltered behind a hill because the bus couldn t go any
further due to the tires being flattened by the shooting of the
terrorists. At the same time a member of the Indonesian Army was passing
by and he quickly defended and protected the bus until the passengers
were rescued, while the jihad soldiers ran off into the jungle.

October 16, 2001 - Christian Refugee Barracks Attacked by the Jihad.
Report from Palu, Capital of Central Sulawesi. Dozens of jihad soldiers
equipped with automatic rifles, attacked the refugee barracks occupied
by about 30 families/200 people in the village of Madale about 20 km
east of Poso in the direction of the village of Lawanga.
On Wednesday, October 16, about 3.15 am, the jihad terrorists attacked
from the direction of the coconut trees which were around the barracks
even though an army guard post was there.
There were three refugee barracks in this village. Only one was
Christian and surrounding it were the Muslim refugee barracks. The
pattern of the jihad attack was to burn down the end of these barracks
so that people would run out to discover what the fire was about.
However at that same moment they were welcomed with a hail of bullets,
so that several victims fell.
As a result of this attack, one person was killed and one was seriously
wounded.
Yambi Pio (56) was killed, shot in the chest.
Lukas Salimpa (70) was seriously wounded, shot in both his hips.

Before he died, Yambi was taken to the Tagolu Health Centre, but he was
unable to be saved. Lukas Salimpa was moved to the Tagolu Health Centre
then to the Tentena General Hospital because his wounds were very
serious. The Chief of Police in Poso, through their Tentena station,
contacted the Tentena Crisis Centre to evacuate the Christian residents
concerned. But the evacuation team returned with empty vehicles because
the military there prevented the evacuation attempts and promised to
guarantee security.
Meanwhile the Crisis Centre deeply regrets the actions and attitude of
the peace-keeping forces who have given that guarantee of security but
have not fulfilled their promises. People continue to be shot, wounded
and killed. Property continues to be stolen and burned. Will there have
to be more fatalities before they take their promise to guarantee
security is taken seriously?

October 17 - Burning of Passenger Buses Continues.
The holding up, burning of passenger buses and killing of passengers is
still being carried out in Poso. Various incidents involving bus
hold-ups and attacks on Christian villages and on individuals has made
the Christians fed up and disappointed with the government especially
the defense forces who do not act firmly against the jihad, even though
it is clear where they are and what attacks they carry out. Furthermore,
they are not local Poso inhabitants but newcomers who are making the
Poso situation even more precarious. Angered by the situation,
unfortunately a group of Christians let out their frustrations by
stopping a passenger bus travelling from Kolonedale to Palu in the Kamba
village, East Pamona district on Wednesday, October 17. All the
passengers were ordered out and the bus was burned down. The passengers
were unharmed.

October 18 Muslims in Palu check ID papers.
On Thursday, October 18, from the early morning Muslim masses carried
out a sweeping exercise, checking identity cards in Poso. They stopped
every car which passed by and examined the identity cards of every
passenger. At about 3 pm local time, a bus traveling from Palu to Luwuk,
"PO Primadona" was stopped and they discovered a man who was a
Christian. Immediately the jihad terrorists slew him shooting him in the
stomach until he was dead. The victim was taken to the Poso General
Hospital and was buried in Kawua near Poso.
Two buses travelling from Palu to Toraja, "PO Bunta Ria" and
"Batutumonga" were stoned by the Muslim masses near the Kayamana
district mosque, Poso, which is located near the Police security post.
The windows of the buses were smashed and the bodies of the vehicles
badly damaged nevertheless they were able to continue their journey
until they arrived in Toraja, South Sulawesi.
A private van was also stopped by the Muslim masses but the passengers
were saved by the military. Also in Tabalu, Poso Coastal District, the
jihad terrorists stopped a jeep which was occupied by Christians, the
vehicle was burned and the fate of the passengers is unknown. They are
presumed to have been killed and the bodies disposed of.  The jihad
terrorists in the city of Poso and surrounding areas also continue
sweeping operations, checking the identification papers so that the land
route from Tentena to Palu via Poso City is currently closed for
Christians.

October 18 Christian kidnappedand slain in Tabalu.
On October 18 2001 the anniversary of the GKST (Christian Church of
Central Sulawesi Presbyterian), Mr. Towe Wilelipu, husband of Rev. Nety
Zion Kalengkongan MTh and the former Village Chief of Peleru in the
County of Mori Atas in the District of Morowali was taken by Muslims in
the village of Tabalu. The victim was passing through the area on his
way home to his village of Betalemba driving his car and accompanied by
military guard. However, due to the number of weapons carried by the
Muslims the military were unable to protect him. He was taken with his
car and all his luggage to the village of (a jihad HQ) then he was
tortured, cut up and then burned.

October 18 Christian kidnapped and slain in Tabalu.
Also on October 18 the jihad burned a Church and Church manse in the
village of Kabalo Tojo County, District of Poso shortly after the
Central Sulawesi Police Chief passed by on their way to the District of
Luwuk.

October 19 - Jihad soldiers from Ambon Captured.
On Friday, October 19, the military succeed in capturing 15 jihad
terrorists from Ambon who were led by Sergeant Abdul Rais from the Ambon
Police together with firearms and bombs while they were filling a
fishing boat with water in the waters of Balantak, Banggai, Central
Sulawesi on their return journey to Ambon after setting down 30 jihad
soldiers with thousands of bullets and weapons in Poso.

October 20 - Betalemba is attacked by the Jihad terrorists.
Hundreds of jihad soldiers carrying automatic firearms have again
carried out an attack on a Christian area, the village of Betalemba,
Poso Coastal District on Saturday, October 20. The attack began at 9.00
pm and continued until Sunday October 21, 7.00 am. The Christians
defended themselves with whatever they could find.
The Army and Police forces who were guarding the village also became
victims of the jihad shooting with two of them being shot dead. With
this event the military became very angry and fought desperately against
the jihad. The Army and the Police forces who are on guard responded to
the attack because their lives were also threatened. Until this time the
attacks against the Christians had been ignored and never dealt with
seriously.

The military, especially the Police, always claimed that the situation
was under control, peaceful and favorable for reconciliation, even
though the jihad terrorists were repeatedly carrying out attacks. The
military would just say that it was a disturbance caused by armed gangs.
Nevertheless only after there were casualties among the military and
among the Muslims, have they responded seriously and taken some firm
action. Previously there had been casualties among the military, but
they were Christians and the military only said that it was a normal
part of military life.
There has never been a thorough and serious investigation. One example
is the poisoning of a Police officer (a Christian) from the Central
Sulawesi Police Force. He was Darius Paparang (26) stationed in a Muslim
area in the village of Tongko, Lage. He died after drinking coffee which
had been poisoned. His mouth frothed and his body turned blue. Even so,
Drs Agus Sugianto of the Central Sulawesi Police Force said that there
were no suspicious circumstances.

In the recent jihad terrorist attacks there was a fierce fight which
lasted the whole night and involved several different types of automatic
weapons which were used by the jihad warriors. The military which
consisted of only a few members, were surrounded by hundreds of jihad
soldiers with firearms but they were able to hold off the jihad attack
and force them to retreat to the village of Tabalu, Kasiguncu, in the
Poso Coastal District. Nevertheless these jihad terrorists again tried
to attack other nearby Christian villages in Tangkura, but the military
who were on guard, chased them off so that again there was shooting that
lasted till Sunday morning when finally the jihad retreated.
Meanwhile the Christians were completely uninvolved except for those who
were on guard behind the military. Despite the military resistance, the
jihad terrorists succeeded in burning down 30 Christian homes and
shooting dead two members of the military: Police Officer Ardiansyah and
a member of the Indonesian Army whose name and company has not yet been
released. Police Officer Ardiansyah was promoted and afterward was
buried on Sunday night in the cemetery with a military ceremony in the
headquarters of the Mamboro-Palu Police led by the Central Sulawesi
Chief of Police Zainal Abidin Ishak.

On the jihad terrorist side there were 30 people killed and 38 who were
captured and arrested. Most of those who were killed and the ones
arrested (now being held by the Palu Police) were of large stature, had
long beards and were not able to speak Indonesian. From their
characteristics, they appeared to be Afghans from the Al Chaidah network
led by Osamah bin Laden of the Taliban which is operating in Indonesia.
They came from Ambon. (All the recruits of Osamah bin Laden and the
Taliban must wear long beards).

October 20 Police search Tabalu seeking the murderers of Mr Wilielipu.
On October 20 the military conducted a sweeping operation in Tobalu
looking for Mr. Towe Wilelipu who was kidnapped on October 18. The
military succeeded in finding some weapons and arrested a few of those
believed to be involved, but they had to face strong protests from the
mass of Muslims especially the women who placed their babies on the
ashphalt road and they screamed while holding bombs and threatening to
blow up the babies. From the other side they held cameras ready to take
pictures of the explosions. This caused the military to retreat and not
continue to arrest the alleged terrorists.

October 21 Muslims protest the capture of jihad terrorists.
As a result of the detention of these 38 jihad terrorists by the
military in the Poso Police Resort, other jihad warriors carried out a
demonstration Sunday October 21, from the afternoon until the evening in
order to demand the liberation of the 38 arrested jihad soldiers. The
jihad masses exploded a bomb in the yard of the Poso Police Resort at
Gebangrejo and the sound and reverberation of it was felt about 3km away
in Kawua. Because the situation was unfavorable, the 38 detainees were
taken and held in the Palu Police Station.
Other sources of information said that there were 30 people who were
detained, while others said the number was 36 of which 6 men were
suspects while the 30 were still undergoing intensive investigation.
Other sources close to the investigators said that there were 38 people
arrested but 8 of them were not disclosed (were covered up) because of
certain reasons. Possibly they were commanders in the field who had
special connections with people high in government.

October 21 Two brutally slain near Poso.
About 10.00 am local time a Christian named Ambrosius Reakale from the
village of Tambaro, Lage who lived in the village of Watuawu because his
wife came from there, was shot by a jihad terrorist from behind while he
was being given a lift on the back of a motorbike by a member of the
Indonesian Army name Yono, who had all that day been on duty in the
district of Tojo and was passing through the Muslim village of Toyado.
Suddenly they were shot at from behind so that the bullet went right
through Ambrosius and struck Yono, the Indonesian soldier who was taking
him. The two of them died and their bodies were evacuated to the Health
Center in Tagolu by military who were stationed in the Tagolu village.

October 21 Chinese Pentecostal Christian viciously slain.
Also on Sunday, October 21, the jihad terrorists also killed a
Pentecostal Christian of Chinese descent, who name was Oni Pakaiya (50)
who lived in the Muslim city of Ampana. While he was taking the products
of his plantation (cloves, coconut and chocolate) through the Muslim
village of Toyado, Poso Coastal District. He was hacked to death by the
terrorists.
The victim had a gaping wound in his right eye. At the time, the victim
was driving a red passenger van and was passing through the Muslim
village of Toyado together with two others, Vanya (a woman) and
Mokodongan, an Indonesian Army soldier from the Kipan 711 company at
Kawau. The vehicle was stopped and the victim was dragged out and slain
while the other two were set free because they were Muslims.

October 21 Brutal attack in Labuhan, Poso.
In another incident on Sunday October 21, there was a bus "Super Motor"
travelling from Luwuk to Palu which was detained by about 50 jihad
soldiers in the Muslim village of Labuhan, Lage, in the Poso District.
The vehicle was stopped. They searched for Christians and they found one
woman and a boy aged 8 years old.
With great brutality they dragged the eight year old boy away from his
mother s lap and dragged him along the asphalt because the child was
crying with fear and screaming, calling for his mother. The terrorists
continued to drag him and then ran off with him into the jungle while
his mother wept hysterically until she went into shock. The fate of the
child is still unknown. He is presumed to have been slain.

October 22 Jihad vs Military in Mapane and Tabalu.
As a follow up to previous incidents fighting broke out at the
T-junction on the road to Mapane. The jihad sent several trucks of
warriors to assist in the fighting in Tabalu and they were stopped by
the Mobile Police Brigade at the T-junction Brimob. As a consequence of
this incident, four truck loads of women were brought in to protest the
actions of the police and demanded the release of the arrested jihad
warriors. The jihad accused the police of oppressing the civilians and
demanded the removal of the Mobile Police Brigade from Poso.
The jihad then burned down the guard posts of the Mobile Police Brigade
in the villages of Betalemba, Ratolene, Mapane, Moengko and a few other
villages in the District of Poso so that eventually all units of the
Mobile Brigade who were on guard in Poso and now there is no police or
military guard in any of the Christian villages to provide them with
security. This had provided an even better opportunity for the shedding
of a lot more Christian blood. It seems that this is part of their grand
design to have a Bloody Christmas in their attempts to destroy Tentena
and the rest of the Christian areas to make it easier to implement
shariah law.

October 30, 2001 the village of Ratolene attacked and Pinedapa wiped
out.
On October 30 between 1.00 am and 2.00 am a jihad group equipped with
various weapons attacked Christian villages. The jihad bombed and burned
down the church in Ratolene and burned down the rest of the Christian
homes that were still standing in the village of Pinedapa. The
Christians put up no resistance whatsoever and just fled with the
clothes they had on their bodies.

October 31, 2001 the village of Malitu destroyed.
On October 31 between 02.00 - 05.30 am around 400 500 jihad warriors
again attacked the Christian village of Malitu burning down150 homes but
they did not burn down the church or the school. The Christians ran into
the jungles in the direction of the Tangkura and Pandiri villages.

November 1 Christian Crisis Center searches for Christians hiding in
jungles.
Beginning November 1, 2001 the Crisis Center of GKST Churches in Tentena
with the local people began searching for and evacuating Christians
still hiding in the jungles. The current information has no reports of
deaths but two youths from Betania and one from Malitu were declared to
be missing while one other was found badly wounded, Nandia (40) a
resident of Malitu from the Daa tribe, who was shot in the left hip. She
was evacuated to the SALVATION ARMY HOSPITAL in Palu to remove the
bullet from her body.

November 1 Villages of Tomata, Pinedapa and Tomata attacked again.
During the early morning hours on Thursday, November 1. several hundred
Muslim jihad "warriors" who are affiliated with the terrorist group
Laskar Jihad appeared from out of the jungles, attacking the Christian
villages of Tomata, Pinedapa and Kasiguncu. The terrorists set fire to
most of the homes and destroyed churches. Three Christians were
confirmed dead in the village of Tomata and there were reported to be
many people injured.
Later that same day, terrorist blocked the main road from Poso to Palu,
the capital of Central Sulawesi. The terrorists stopped cars and buses
as they attempted to identify Christians. Sources say that at least four
Christians in vehicles that were forced to stop were killed. The police
and military were later dispatched to the area. Meanwhile, the jihad
terrorists had fled back to the jungles.

November 2- Malita attacked again.
Another attack by the Laskar Jihad terrorist took place in the early
morning hours on Friday, November 2. The Christian village of Malitu, 20
miles from Poso, was attacked and once again the Muslim terrorists
destroyed nearly every home and a church. There were no deaths reported.
The Christians fled to the jungles.

November 4 Sepe attacked.
Sunday November 4 at around 7.00 am a resident of the village of Sepe,
in the County of Lage, District of Poso, saw several people unknown to
him creeping through the market gardens and jungle in the vicinity of
Sepe. He immediately reported what he had seen to the village and as he
was doing so several garden huts began to burn. The military authorities
on guard in the village went to the site to check but the intruders had
fled.

November 5 Sepe attacked again. On Monday November 5 at 1.00 pm the
jihad again endeavoured to attack Sepe and succeeded in advancing to the
middle of the village. The Christians at first were surprised and
panicked but were able to regroup and resist the attack. At the same
time a truck from the village of Buyung Katedo passed through Tagolu on
the way to Sepe carrying a load of women wearing jilbab head covering.
The military guarding the village of Tagolu suspected their intentions
and intercepted the vehicle and examined it. It turned out that they
were jihad soldiers who were disguising themselves as women and were on
there way to attack the Christians in Sepe. The found bombs and a
variety of guns and rifles. They were not arrested and nothing was
confiscated. They were just sent back. In the meantime fighting in the
village of Sepe continued and the Indonesian military guarding Sepe were
unable to expel the attacking jihad force until another military unity
arrived to support them. About 5.00 pm the jihad were finally evicted
from the village. By the grace of God no Christians were killed or
houses destroyed in the battle.

November 5-7 Malitu and Pantangolemba destroyed.
Repeated attacks by the jihad terrorists have now succeeded in totally
destroying the villages in the Poso Pesisir, Poso coastal areas, the
last to be destroyed during attacks from November 5-7 have razed Malitu
and Pantongolemba to the ground forcing the Christians to retreat and
set up blockades to protect the areas of Tangkura and Ranonocu.

November 7-10 Ranononcu and Lembomawo attacked.
The jihad terrorists have launched more attacks advancing 5 kilometers
from the city of Poso along the road that leads to Tentena. The
Christians are trying to defend the route to Tentena and several have
been killed and wounded. If they break through here, the danger to some
50,000 Christians beyond that point will be perilous indeed. As this
report is being written, November 11, fighting is continuing and the
church leaders are appealing for international intervention and the
prayers of Christians around the world.

Current general situation
Most attacks by the jihad occur either at night or on Sundays during the
day when people are either sleeping or at Church. With all these attacks
against the Christian villages during October and November all the
coastal villages are now without electricity. The Jihad are attempting
to isolate Tentena by taking control of all routes into Tentena so that
supply routes of food and other essential items have been almost totally
severed. At the same time farming is difficult under the current
circumstances.
As a consequence there is now a crisis of food, clothing, accommodation
and medical supplies. Due to local knowledge of jungle tracks, some
essential supplies are able to be transported by foot on a two day trip
through the jungles. This is totally inadequate for the need.  So please
pray that these supplies can be safely brought into these Christians in
this desperate hour and that the Lord will intervene to save these
50,000 Christians now trapped in the area from being massacred by these
jihad terrorists. Also pray that the Lord will intervene to put a stop
to these attacks by the jihad.

What can we do ? Here are some ways you can help:
PRAY
(i)  PRAY ....these (Laskar Jihad) are people under satanic power. Our
battle is first and foremost a spiritual one. We need to pray that they
will be delivered from Satan's clutches of deception.
(ii)  PRAY for GOD's protection for the victims, and the loved ones
(iii) PRAY for judgment on those who continue to resist the Holy Spirit
and perpetrate the violence.... AND that when judgment comes - they will
know, "it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living GOD".
(iv)  PRAY for the many peace-loving Muslim Indonesians, that they will
rise up in protest all across Indonesia ....against the Laskar Jihad and
the foreign extremists.
(v)  PRAY for the different Indonesian organisations and churches who
are going out to help the victims, risking their own lives in the
process.
(vi)  PRAY for me and the team travelling with me, as we visit some of
the camps in December to celebrate Christmas with them.
(vii)  30 DAYS OF FAST & PRAYER
At the height of this conflict, about a year and half ago, we called for
a 30 day fast and prayer and many responded and we saw THE HAND OF GOD
...violence was miraculously averted. We need to come together again.
Will you consider taking a day where you (or your church) could commit
to fast and pray for the situation in the Maluku islands and Sulawesi,
sometime during the next 30 days, beginning 27th NOVEMBER to 26th
DECEMBER ....please let me know. I want to try to get every day of this
30 days covered with prayer.

Our prayers can change the BLOODY CHRISTMAS envisioned by the Laskar
Jihad into one where we will see GOD's love and glory revealed ....a
celebration of GOD's Gift to Humanity - JESUS CHRIST our Saviour and
Master.
