Baptism - A very important Commandment by Rabbi Simon
Created: June 2008

Some important terms:
TeNakh – Torah, Nevim and Ketuvim Hebrew Bible known as the Old Testament
Mikvah - to Immerse in water, pool of water or fountain of water
Yahushua - The Hebrew Name for Jesus of Nazareth
AFNHSS – All quotes from the Abrahamic-Faith Netzarim Hebraic Study Scriptures
Many believers today ignore the value of Baptism in their life and ignore the words of Yahushua the Messiah who told us to baptise in His name.
Matthew 28:19 (KJV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
The more accurate version without the additions
Mattityahu 28:19 (AFNHSS) Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, V’ Tavilotym (Immersing) them in My Name.
Some teach that its need is simply as an outward sign, some believers have their babies baptised by the sprinkling of water and think this is enough to fulfil this very important commandment. Many do not even realise that this ordinance has come right out of the pages of the TeNakh (commonly and erroneously known as the Old Testament). There are several issues here that we need to address. First of all where did it ALL come from and why the need?
It’s easy to dispel some myths that this is a new commandment because it isn't. Let's ask the basic question, was Yahushua the Messiah carrying a New Testament with Him? No, they how can this be a new commandment? The ReNewed Covenant was not even written during His time or at least the disciples did not start writing until twenty years after His Death and Resurrection so quite clearly He had the scrolls of the Hebrew Bible TeNakh to read out at His time which even He read in the Temple (Luke 4:17-18). What language? In Hebrew and not Aramaic as Hebrew is the official language of the New Testament and not Greek that most are into. Yahushua did not carry all the scrolls as they were very expensive to carry so at best people usually carried one or two scrolls. The synagogues kept most of the scrolls of the Torah and Prophets etc.
The commandment for all believers to baptise was enacted through a tradition from the School of Hillel, most people are not aware of this. It was accepted by all Pharisees that in order to come into the community of Y’sra’el a Baptism would be done in a certain manner and Yahushua shows complete agreement with this halacha like with so many others traditions that were formulated by the School of Hillel. Note also that the words Father, Son and Holy Spirit were added most likely by the Catholic Church to fit the Trinitarian formula as no one had heard of the Trinity in the first century, it was foreign to them and is unscriptural. The actual Baptism was always done in the name of the Rabbi and in this case Yahushua our Rabbi our Master and this was sealed by prayers in His name. This commandment for My Name in verses Matthew 28:19 has a certain meaning attached to it plus the authority that Yahushua of Nazareth carried.
Mattityahu 29:19 (AFNHSS) Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, V’ Tavilotym (Immersing) them in MY NAME.
My name means in my authority and in my personal name that is Hebrew Yahushua.
The baptism ceremony that Christians love so much and some have even changed to sprinkling is actually a tradition of the School of Hillel once again showing that Christians do keep many Jewish traditions but are ignorant of their origin. This was adopted by Yahushua and is what allows one to join the common wealth of Y’sra’el to be grafted into the nation to take the yoke of Torah upon themselves in certain stages explained by your personal rabbi.
Moreover, we find a wonderful interesting act that John the Immerser was performing and this was Baptism of Repentance in the Jordan River but where did John the Immerser get this idea from since he had not even met Yahushua yet?
Mattityahu 3:6 And there were many immersed by him in the Yardan (Jordan) river, confessing their sins.
Clearly John the Immerser was dipping people in water after they repented and he also did not have a copy of the New Testament in his pocket for reference as it had not yet been written. Could you tell me according to what formula was he baptising these sinners since there was No Gospels or any other book of the New Testament? He only had the Torah and Prophets plus Psalms which refers to the TeNakh (Torah + Nevim and Ketuvim).
Now would it be reasonable to believe that a child could take the baptism of REPENTANCE if he/she was taking a Baptism as John was performing in the Desert? This is unlikely which makes children’s baptisms totally unscriptural.
Clearly children cannot repent of their sins since they are not in the age of consciousness nor have any understanding. Could they be submerged as in the River Jordan or any other river? Again we must answer No since confirmation cannot be called a Baptism because the whole act of Baptism and the Greek word for Baptism which is "Baptizio" and the Hebrew word Mikvah refers to washing in living waters i.e. a river, lake or a bath filled with running water therefore a confirmation can NEVER be a baptism. Obviously it is apparent that John the Immerser was doing something ancient and accepted in the community and not New. Try telling this truth to the 38,000 Christian denominations each having their own idea of baptism mostly unscriptural. This is why it is paramount that a baptism be done by a knowledgeable redeemed rabbi in the name of Yahushua.
We find in the Torah that YHWH the Elohim of Abraham declared this to Moses:
Shemoth 19:10-11 Then hwhy said to Musa (Moses), Go to the people, and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes,
11 And let them be ready for the third day: for on the third day hwhy will come down upon Mount Sini’yah (Sinai) in the sight of all the people.
YHWH was not asking to wash their clothes at the local laundry behind this verse is the message of organised baptism of repentance and with vows before they would stand before the Holy Mountain of YHWH. Today most just get up and go to Church performing a water ceremony that has no real meaning to it forgetting there are important elements that church Pastors are not even aware of to perform.
The argument of whether the Greek word Baptizio means to dip or simply wash is one not worth even having since the symbols of washing clearly attribute something greater and common sense should prevail once we look at the ancient customs of Y’sra’el.
Ancient customs from the Torah, Prophets and Psalms:
The Mikvah (1) or Baptism was done annually during the Days of Awe as a purification ritual that is the time just before the Feast of Yom Kippur. It was done going down in the water three times forward. The water must be fresh stream or river water because it needed to be living water.
We also have the Mikvah (2) of Repentance, the Mikvah (3) of Fire and the Mikvah (4) of the Ruach.
The Mivkah of Repentance which we read Yahuchannan (John) giving can be done at anytime.
Then we have the Mikvah of joining the community of Y’sra’el which Yahushua commanded in which an oath had to be done in front of designated elders or rabbis. This could not be performed in isolatioin.
Symbols:
Yahushua was in the tomb for 3 days and 3 nights.
Yahushua died and rose from the grave.
We likewise in the Drash (allegorical picture) sense die e.g. are buried that means it is not sprinkling but burial followed by the Resurrection but this is symbolic. The actual meaning is to die to the world’s pagan ways and to rise with the nation of Y’sra’el regenerated by the Elohim of Y’sra’el. It was actually like a wedding mikvah that the bride had to perform so in likewise we perform the mikvah as we are the allegorical bride and Yahushua the bridegroom.
In Y’sra’el in order to join the community of the faithful one had to take a Mikvah (Bath) and renounce all old things and then he was considered with the community of the faithful. The Hebrew people did not believe in or conduct sprinklings but the person went into the water and came out without any assistance, an act of faith renouncing all idolatries, repenting of his sins and vowing to obey the commandments and fulfil the HALACHA (walk of faith keeping Torah) exactly as our father Abraham did. This is why a Baptism is a greater sign of purity of returning back to Y’sra’el (of YHWH) and be sanctified to be called a believer and to walk in power of the Ruach. The hands were laid after and prayers were done to the person to bless him.
According to rabbinical customs it was to make a Mikvah (Baptism) kosher you need 71 gallons of water (Lamentations Rabbah 2:4). Now does this sound like water for sprinkling or washing for a proper Bath? This is why I said earlier the Baptizio in Greek argument is simply foolish and irrelevant. We did not use that word we used the word Tavilotym for a proper bath.
Yahuchannan 5:1-8 (1) After this there was a mo’ed (feast) of the Yahudim (Hebrew people); and vSwhy went up to Yerushalim.
2 Now there is at Yerushalim by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Beyth-chesed (Bethesda), having five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the mayim (water).
4 For a heavenly messenger went down at a certain season into the pool, and stirred the mayim (water): whosoever then first after the stirring of the mayim (water) stepped in was made whole of whatever disease he had.
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty eight years.
6 When vSwhy saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he said to him, do You want to be made whole?
7 The sick man answered him, Master (Adon: Lord), I have no man, when the mayim (water) is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steps down before me.
8 vSwhy said to him, Rise, take up your mat, and walk.
Here is a classical scenario where there was a baptism pool near the sheep gate in Jerusalem with five porticos where sick people gathered waiting to get into the water. Now do you think this Mikvah (Baptism) is a sprinkling or washing? Why didn't someone just sprinkle some water on the poor sick men outside the pool? Because it had to be a washing in the water with him willing to renounce all evil acts and idolatries in front of an authority. Clearly the man could not enter the pool so needed assistance but before anyone could come and help him someone else would take his place so he would miss his chance. This place was known for its miraculous healing for an angel of YHWH visiting it to stir the waters and then anyone who went in after this stirring would get healed completely. The point I am making is that washing or Baptism was inside the water and you would get a modern version of a Bath but it has nothing to do with sprinkling of water on someone. The whole thing has been conducted incorrectly by Christian denominations with their illegal halacha (way of doing things).
We must remember that for us to enter into redemption or deliverance we enter into a marriage contract with the El of Y’sra’el which is explained something like this; Deliverance is not some hocus pocus mumbo jumbo but a very concrete act. Please see my article Salvation under Ask the Rabbi page.
Yirmeyah 2:1-2 1 Moreover the word of hwhy came to me, saying, 2 Go and cry in the ears of Yerushalim, saying, Thus says hwhy; I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your espousals, when you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
YHWH Adonai took Y’sra’el as a Bride so we have to ask what happens in a Hebrew marriage?
One of the washing (Mikvah) customs of the Hebrew marriage is when the bride becomes sanctified by having a water immersion. The word Mikvah means a pool or collection of water and is usually a bath taken for ritual purification (The emphasis on consecration and holiness). The Hebrews did this for Sabbaths and feast preparations as suggested above for the feast of Yom Kippur. Usually the Mikvah (Baptism) represented an outward sign of an inward reality. It signifies the need to separate from the world and to cling to your husband (Allegorically speaking) e.g. Yahushua. It means you have left all the previous life to continue a Renewed life.
This also means when we repent of our sins we have the Baptism to announce who our allegorical husband is and thus we must follow the traditional correct understanding of Baptism that has come to us through the Torah and prophets.
Y’cheki’el 16:8-9 Now when I passed by you, and looked upon you, behold, your time was the time of love; and I spread the edge of my garment over you, and covered your nakedness: yes, I swore to you, and entered into a covenant with you, says Master hwhy, and you became mine.9 Then I washed you with mayim (water); yes, I THOROUGHLY WASHED AWAY YOUR BLOOD FROM YOU, and I anointed you with oil.
How did Yahuweh wash the blood? Was it water or was it sand?
The marriage with the Elohim of Y’sra’el
Even Yahushua was baptised for righteousness sake and not for repentance since He had no sin but it was to reveal humility.
Mattityahu 3:13-15 Then vSwhy came from Galil to Yardan (Jordan) to Yahuchannan (John), to be immersed by him.
14 But Yahuchannan (John) tried to prevent him, saying, I have need to be immersed of you, and you come to me?
15 And vSwhy answering said to him, let it happen now: for it is important for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed him.
Notice why Yahuchannan asked Yahushua to immerse him? Since Yahushua was a known Pharisee and Rabbi, He was a well known priest of the Temple.
In the old days such cleansing was so important for the ritual of purification, priests became unclean all the time thus taking many baths (Mikvahs).
Dabrim 23:10-11 If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of nocturnal emission, then he shall go outside the camp, he may not come re-enter the camp:
11 But it shall be, when evening comes on, he shall wash himself with mayim (water): and when the sun is down, he shall come into the camp again.
Rabbi Sha’ul talks about a spiritual Baptism like this;
First Quorint’yah 10-1:4 Moreover, Ysraelite brothers, I would not want ye to be ignorant, how that all our ahvot (fathers) were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 And were all immersed in Musa (Moses) in the cloud and in the sea;
3 And did all eat the same spiritual food;
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Messiah.
There are many types of immersions in the TeNakh I have listed some above but here it is important to understand that yes the Baptists are right and the others who do not submerge simply need to fall in line with the Bible but the Baptists need to add to their list what I suggested above, renouncing all idolatries and wickedness and vow to walk in the Commandments as Yahushua did which even the Baptist's don't do like keeping or Guarding the Torah that folks includes the Sabbath as a first and the 7 annual feasts as a second list.
I am not saying that the Baptists win because of some contest between the denominations but what I am saying is this in order to get the correct mikvah formula from the TeNakh we must understand that according to Biblical theme Mikvah (immersion) was instituted from the Torah and that the Mikvah in the ancient times could have been done more than once as it was to do with ritual purity annually however we must understand that our whole relationship with the Elohim of Abraham, Y’tzhak and Yaqub is one of a betrothal and marriage and thus the immersion principle applies because that is the only way the bride prepares to meet her Bridegroom therefore showing obedience from the outset. When you do not baptise properly because of bad church teaching then of course it is not your fault but when you do realise what needs to be done then you best go and do it.
Also remembering that sprinkling does not fit the Biblical custom so when we argue doctrine we do not argue on the basis of what one word in Greek translates or or not but what the connection is to the actual Torah custom in the past and what the context shows us in the present. We must get our doctrines from Torah and not the Renewed Covenant. The Renewed Covenant (NT) must fit Torah not the other way around.
The question you have to ask yourself is did you have a confirmation as a baby or baptism via immersion?
Do you want to please our heavenly Father?
If you answer is "Yes" then there is no longer any need to wait and you need to join the faithful and be obedient to the call of Yahushua to be submerged in Baptism, repent and turn away from all idolatries and join the community of faithful Y’sra’el in the Name of Yahushua.
For article what name should I baptize in please read here:
What name should I be baptized in?
http://www.abrahamic-faith.com/Simon/HTML/What%20Name%20shall%20I%20be%20baptized%20in.html
Now a question arises by some that I have been baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit so what do I do as that was not the formula the master gave but this particular formula was given by the likely culprit the Catholic Church.
At this point the best thing to do is find a Torah teacher who believes in Messiah and ask him to baptize you in the name of Yahushua thus you fulfil the commandment. Remember to renounce all idolatries and that you take the yoke of Torah upon you.
YHWH bless you
Shalom Shalom

Beyth Yahushua – Son of Tzadok, Son of Dawud
Would you like to know the identity of Yahushua's family? Did He have brothers and sisters, did He get married, are not Rabbis meant to marry, was Mary Magdalene His wife? All these answered in the book. Are you fed-up of hearing objections such as if you do not know who Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are then how can you claim to have the truth?
Do you feel frustrated to go to your Pastor only to be told he does not know?
What caused Rabbi Paulos to persecute perfectly normal Jewish men and women who simply practiced Judaism? Who was Nicodemus, what relationship did Yahushua have with Lazarus? Did Yahushua have relatives? For too long He has been portrayed as the wandering man with no belongings and no family and living wildly, picking up food from the trees, fields and women offering him handouts.
This picture is both misleading and deceptive. Do you want to know the powerful family of Yahushua, fill the gaps, who were Mark, Luke, Matthew and even John? What connection has Joseph of Arimathaea got with Yahushua and why would a rich man like him be willing to give his own expensive tomb for Yahushua’s burial?
Do rich men do such things, if so then why was the rich man in Matthew 19:21 unwilling to give away all his money? Did Yahushua carry the curse of Jeconiah (Jer 22:24-30)? The answer that Christendom gives is the curse lifted because of the virgin birth or the lineage switch. Did it? Answer NO. Christendom’s answers on this are wrong. What about the genealogy of Luke and Matthew why two fathers of Yahushua Heli or Jacob in Matthew 1:16 and Luke 3:23? Will the real father of Yahushua please stand up!
Who were the Hebrews, what is the West in Hosea 11:10?
Hosea 11:10 (KJV)…then the children shall tremble from the west.
If we believe popular opinions then they are all in Europe and America but the reality is very different. This book is a wake up call to the last generations.
This book will give you new insights and the rich history of Yahushua.
